Heraklion Travel information The 'Chandakas' by the Saracens, 'Candia' by the Venetians, the current Heraklion of Crete consists of the old city, surrounded by Venetian walls, within which are found most of the attractions, while the new town lies outside them.

Sightseeing   Heraklion Sights:

  • The Morozini Fountain at the Eleftherios Venizelos Square (the one with the lions). We usually eat here and our morning pastries after traveling by ship.
  • The Loggia and the church of St. Titus
The church was originally built in Byzantine times. The Venetians used it as a global metropolis and the Turks as a mosque. Today, after numerous disasters, renovations and adjustments to keep the skull of St Titus, and the architecture shows its special and distinct history.
The loggia was built in the early 16th century and was the center of life of the nobles of that period. It has been restored to accommodate the City Hall.
  • The church of Saint Minas, patron saint of Heraklion with wall paintings of Michael Damascinos
  • The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.
Is one of the most important in Greece, but will be closed for renovation until spring 2010. Many important exhibits housed temporarily in a building nearby.
  • The Koules Fortress at the harbor entrance.
  • The Cretaquarium, one of the largest aquariums in Europe. Around 15 km from Heraklion city, you can enjoy a fascinating tour of the underwater world
  • The Palace of KnossosIrakleio, Knossos Palace
The center of the ancient Minoan civilization. We all have seen photos of the palace but beeing there ... your hair stand up. If you go by car you can park easily under the olive trees on the left only paying for coffee or refreshments..
  • The Phaistos First built around 4000 years ago in the valley of Mesara. The famous Phaistos Disk, which remains unexplained, exposed in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.
  • The Matala caves
